Hockey Names 101 from @SlavaMalamud

  • CHOOK. Only CHOOK and nothing else. Also, a very soft L @canada_gill I have a question too, is it koval-chook or Koval-chuck
  • It’s bryz (short i) - GAH - loaf RT is Bryzgalov /briz-ga-lov/ or is it /breeze-ga-lov/?
  • Fun Russian fact. Kovalchuk, Kovalev, Kovalenko (remember him?) and Kuznetsov - all the same last name. Means Smith.
  • Koval = Smith in Ukrainian. Kuznets = Smith in Russian. Kovalev is Russified Kovalchuk.
  • Want more? Ovechkin means Little Lamb in Russian. Zajac is rabbit in several Slavic languages.
  • More fun with Slavic hockey names. Prospal means “overslept.” Czech names are generally amazing.
  • OK, final name fact for today. Malkin is 100% Jewish last name. Never seen an ethnic Russian with it. Evgeni doesn’t acknowledge it, though.
  • Malkin means “Malke’s son.” Malke is a Jewish female name. Russian name for “little” would’ve been Malyshev
  • It’s the same as Riffkin. Only Jewish last names come from female first names. Russian names always originate from male ones.
  • Malamud can be nothing else. It’s a schtettel teacher.
